The Capitol Steps
2018/19 Promoter
The Capitol Steps
Over 30 years ago, the Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.

The Capitol Steps were born in December, 1981 when some staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. Ronald Reagan was President when the Steps began, so co-founders Elaina Newport, Bill Strauss and Jim Aidala figured that if entertainers could become politicians, then politicians could become entertainers! Their first idea was to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn’t find three wise men or a virgin! So, they decided to dig into the headlines of the day, and created song parodies & skits which conveyed a special brand of satirical humor that was as popular in Peoria as it was on Pennsylvania Avenue.

with Cristina Mittermeier
Photojournalist Cristina Mittermeier knows the power of water: the power to give life when it is respected, and the power to destroy when it is misused. During her time with the Kayapó people in the Amazon, she documented a society that relied on their local waterway to survive—and found their way of life threatened by a massive new dam. In British Columbia, she found First Nations protecting their sacred headwaters, and in Hawaii, a new community of indigenous peoples seeking to reclaim their connection to the sea. She learned that one concept bound these three disparate communities together: “Enoughness,” or taking only that which you need.

Matt Beilis - The Soul of Pop (Cabaret)
The Soul of Pop is a sensational musical journey through the evolution of pop music based around the piano. With an arsenal of hit songs that span nearly a century, singer songwriter Matt Beilis is able to summon the very soul of pop music with a voice like none you’ve ever heard, as well as virtuoso piano chops. New Yorker Matt Beilis was born with his distinct voice. Some would say it’s unconventional, which would fit the personality of this singer/songwriter/pianist. Matt traded in his Ivy League education along with a lucrative finance career—for a gig in a piano store, betting that his artistic talents would propel him beyond the comfort that his academic achievements all but guaranteed. By choosing his dream over a career on Wall Street, Matt already walked away from a sure thing. Believing 100% in his own talent is the only bet he could make. And he’s all in.
