View from Above

Sometimes, a little distance is all you need to see things in a brand new way. For astronaut Terry Virts, his newfound perspective was from the International Space Station (ISS), where he installed the Cupola module, granting an unprecedented 360-degree view from the station. When he later became the commander of the ISS, he made good use of the Cupola, taking more photographs than any astronaut who came before him. Many of those images were later used in the National Geographic book View From Above and IMAX film A Beautiful Planet, but to hear Virts tell it, no photo can capture the perfect shade of blue from a sunrise viewed from outer space.

Standing at the Water's Edge

with Cristina Mittermeier

Photojournalist Cristina Mittermeier knows the power of water: the power to give life when it is respected, and the power to destroy when it is misused. During her time with the Kayapó people in the Amazon, she documented a society that relied on their local waterway to survive—and found their way of life threatened by a massive new dam. In British Columbia, she found First Nations protecting their sacred headwaters, and in Hawaii, a new community of indigenous peoples seeking to reclaim their connection to the sea. She learned that one concept bound these three disparate communities together: “Enoughness,” or taking only that which you need.

Discover what it’s like to live in—not just visit—two of the world’s great wildlife parks. Charlie Hamilton James has been shooting in Peru’s Manu National Park—the most bio-diverse place on Earth—for more than two decades. Fiercely motivated to protect the rainforest and its inhabitants, he bought a piece of land adjoining the park—only to discover that he had purchased an illegal cocaine factory along with it. His misadventures as an Amazonian landowner were documented in the BBC Television series, I Bought a Rainforest.

More recently, Charlie has been living in Yellowstone, America’s original wildlife park, for the 2016 centennial of the National Park Service. For a recent National Geographic story, he went beyond the park’s boundaries, creating a portrait of the larger ecosystem that Yellowstone supports.

Matt Beilis - The Soul of Pop (Cabaret) Thursday, May 2, 2019 7:00PM · More Info »
Matt Beilis - The Soul of Pop (Cabaret)

The Soul of Pop is a sensational musical journey through the evolution of pop music based around the piano. With an arsenal of hit songs that span nearly a century, singer songwriter Matt Beilis is able to summon the very soul of pop music with a voice like none you’ve ever heard, as well as virtuoso piano chops. Beilis performs smash hits spanning the decades from artists like The Beatles, Elvis, Stevie Wonder, and The Eagles all the way through to current pop hits by John Legend, Adele and more!

New Yorker Matt Beilis was born with his distinct voice. Some would say it’s unconventional, which would fit the personality of this singer/songwriter/pianist. Matt traded in his Ivy League education along with a lucrative finance career—for a gig in a piano store, betting that his artistic talents would propel him beyond the comfort that his academic achievements all but guaranteed. By choosing his dream over a career on Wall Street, Matt already walked away from a sure thing. Believing 100% in his own talent is the only bet he could make. And he’s all in.
